How Often Should I Water My Strawberry Pots?

The rule of thumb is that strawberries need "1 inch of water per week," but that's highly dependent upon the quality of drainage, soil, and container. Strawberries grown in pots will have higher water requirements than strawberries grown in raised garden beds or in-ground. After an initial watering, check the moisture level of your potted strawberries every 3 days by poking your index finger an inch or so into the soil. If it feels moist, no need to water. If it starts to feel dry, then lightly water your plants.

Why Are My Strawberries Small?

There are a number of reasons why your strawberry plants may be producing small berries. Here are all of the ones I've found in my years of strawberry gardening:

Berry Type: Some strawberry types, such as wild strawberries, produce very small berries throughout the growing season.
Plant Age: Young strawberry plants (0-2 years old) are still maturing and may need more time to fully establish themselves before they will deliver big strawberries. Additionally, plants that are beyond their useful years (4-5 years old) will also produce small fruit and smaller harvests.
Fertilizer: While nitrogen is a great fertilizer to help young strawberry plants grow big and bushy, too much nitrogen can encourage strawberry plants to focus their energy on foliage growth over fruit growth.
Stress: Have your strawberry plants been exposed to extreme heat or cold? Disease or pests? Not enough water? Small berries could also be a sign of plant distress.

How Many Strawberries Do You Get Per Plant?

Generally speaking, you can expect 1/2 -1lb of strawberries per plant in a normal growing environment. However, strawberries grown in pots face challenges such as nutrient quality, restrictions on root growth (in containers that are too small), and other factors. With that said, those new to strawberry container gardening can expect 1/4lb-1lb of berries per plant.
